A manned radio beacon and NDB direction finding station was established soon after 1949. A small light was established at the same time. It was demanned and decommissioned after being destroyed by a cyclone in the 1970's. Ref: Cumming et al

Troughton Island is now a major aviation transfer facility for oil rig personnel.
